Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in several conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second Ashes against Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment after his side were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead after three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term place in the side, Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in England's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
