Trump's Framework of Consequences and Incentives

Trump's intense appetite for revenge has swiftly transformed into a structured system. Within the year since his election, the president's fury and impulses have assumed the form of administrative measures in ways reminiscent to past repressive systems. Federal figures who do not cooperate are immediately dismissed and succeeded by loyalists. Political officials who question him encounter prosecution, court proceedings and penalties. Adversaries have been labeled under presidential memoranda as “hostile to national interests”, “against faith communities” and “opposing economic freedom”, and warned with criminal charges as “terrorists”.

The Justice System Remade

Every case involving prosecution of political opponents and leniency for supporters demonstrates its own distinct features. However, despite their particular character, they embody examples of what has developed as a calculated method. These episodes are anything but coincidental. Trump's cleansing of Department of Justice attorneys and law enforcement officials, coupled with his appointment of loyalists in high-level roles, commenced quickly, soon took on a regularity, and has now been molded into a regime. The justice department and the FBI have been restructured into partisan organizations under the president's direct command to implement his directives. Unfairness has been rendered standard. This is the apparatus of revenge.

Administration is preoccupied with penalizing the leader's supposed enemies than they are with protecting our national security.

Within the System

The origin of this mechanism has been exposed in the court filing of several ex- high-ranking FBI executives submitted in September in the judicial system in the capital against FBI director a senior appointee and attorney general Pam Bondi for wrongful dismissal in “a campaign of revenge against Plaintiffs for what administration figures judged to be a refusal to exhibit sufficient political loyalty”. In the complaint that one official, the former interim leader, recounts a exchange in which the director “openly confessed the unlawfulness of his behavior”.

Driscoll had sought to defend agency personnel from being fired, the lawsuit claims. He advised him that “administration officials” – interpreted by him to be the White House and federal prosecutors – had instructed him to dismiss anyone who they identified as having been involved in a law enforcement case against Trump. The document goes on: “He explained that he had to fire the people his bosses told him to dismiss, because his chance to retain his own position relied on the dismissal of the agents who worked on matters involving the chief executive. The director noted that there was no option he or him could do to halt these or any other firings, because ‘the agency sought to put the chief in detention and he recalls it clearly.’” When the official advised him he was disregarding the FBI's own internal rules, the director reportedly said “he understood that and he realized the nature of the immediate dismissals were likely improper”.

Broad Impact

After Patel's reported acknowledgment to the official, the Department of Justice and the FBI have been dismantled and repurposed for the administration's system of punishment. Several of the agency's high-ranking agents were fired or compelled to leave in the early weeks of the presidency. Roughly 4,500 legal professionals at DoJ have accepted a “voluntary departure plan”. A minimum of seven DoJ lawyers, including those in the Manhattan division, stepped down in objection over what they considered as political interference in dropping the criminal prosecution against the local official, Eric Adams, in exchange for his assistance with Trump's Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrests of immigrants. The public integrity section of DoJ, which manages ethical violations, has been reduced to a handful of lawyers. The equality section has been decimated: the majority of its staff has resigned. One-third of top officials at DoJ have left. The division upholding ecological regulations has experienced the exit of a majority its leadership.

Rewards and Sanctions

Concerning the Adams case, the acting US attorney for the southern district of New York, Danielle Sassoon, stepped down in protest against what she characterized as the “quid pro quo”. A key figure, his “border czar,” was present as the implementer with Adams on television to state: “Should he fail to deliver, I will return in the city.”. And, another figure, previously the justice department figure and a former Trump attorney, who arranged the agreement, was granted an judicial position, a possible springboard to the judicial branch.

His protection for crimes perpetrated while in power, awarded by the unprecedented ruling of the GOP-led on the supreme court, thus blocking his criminal case over the Capitol riot and safeguarding his public standing for the national vote, is the foundation stone on which he stands to protect his supporters. With such immunity, he has been liberated to permit misconduct. The consequence of the court judgment infuses his presidency and the GOP down to its bones. The legal case has metastasized. Similar to the former president's White House counsel he remarked about the Watergate
