England along with Welsh Placed Together for 2027 Rugby World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was overseen by sporting icons such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side and Wales find themselves placed in an identical group for the 2027 RWC, setting up a major early encounter in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This pairing recalls their famous clash in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at England's home ground contributed to the hosts' shock group stage elimination.

Key Pool Draws

Ireland and Scotland have likewise been drawn in a pool together, replicating the situation from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, Ireland secured a convincing victory, with Scotland failing to advance to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Portugal, both made a strong impression as underdogs in the last World Cup, complete that same group.

Significantly, the victors of these two groups are kept apart from holders and world number one South Africa before the showpiece match, assuming the Springboks top their own group.

Tournament Implications

Should the pools conclude according to the current world rankings, other top favourites like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would remain separated from the likes of the English and Ireland until the championship decider.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the remaining top-ranked nation on that half of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Draw Blockbuster Opener

Tournament hosts Australia find themselves alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Group A.

Australia will open the tournament in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee fixture designed to jump-start the event.

In other groups, holders the Springboks have been paired with Italy, Georgia and Romania. France are in a pool with Japan, 2031 hosts the USA and Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Los Pumas will face Fiji, Los Leones and Canada as the tournament expands to 24 teams from the 20 who took part in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will feature a last-16 stage for the first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

Although the winner of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the game's heavyweights initially, they will have to face the runner-up from Pool B – most likely Italy – in the first knockout round.

Four of the other six pool winners will play a third-placed side from the pool stages.
