British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of access tunnels leading to the facility... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their skill and their courage," he added. "Including them were thousands of British personnel stationed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our safety, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in the country, subsequent to an ambush killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
